Single seeds are pure grain and seed varieties — without mixture, without additives. Those who mix themselves or supplement specifically can find individual components here in package sizes from small treat packs to 25-kilo sacks.
Which single seed for what?
Millet spray is the classic treat for budgies, canaries and exotic birds — it's offered on the ear and keeps birds occupied while feeding. Millet, dari and cardinal seed belong in practically every ornamental bird mix. Crushed oats and rolled oats are starch-rich energy suppliers and are used especially in pigeons during travel time and chick rearing. Milo corn, black maize and Bordeaux maize provide starch, Buckwheat and linseeds complement the mix with starch and oil respectively. Sunflower seeds are available shelled and unshelled — shelled for wild birds in winter feed, unshelled as energy feed.
Mix it yourself or supplement?
Those who feed a ready-made mix usually supplement selectively: a little more oats during travel time, linseeds during moulting, cardinal seed as a reward. Those who mix completely themselves have full control over the composition with single seeds — and over the price, because large packages are significantly cheaper per kilo.
Storage
Single seeds should be stored dry, cool and dark, preferably in airtight containers. Stored properly, they keep for a season; seed that has become damp should no longer go in the feeder.
