Cardy seed is spelled differently (safflower seed, cartham seed) and resembles white sunflower kernels – only significantly smaller – but belongs to the thistle family.
Cardy seed contains plenty of iron and calcium and has a much higher protein content of over 25% with over one third less crude fat (30%).
Safflower oil is rich in vitamin E and contains 75% unsaturated fatty acids.
The main growing regions are in India, Mexico, the USA, Argentina and Australia.
Application instructions:
It is popular for use with large parakeets, cockatiels, parrots, macaws, canaries, lovebirds and wild birds in general.
For smaller birds, cardy seed is not particularly suitable due to its hard shell; for them it is often cracked or rolled before feeding.
