Peas originally come from Asia. The protein-rich pea has therefore been considered an important crop for humans and animals for thousands of years. Unripe peas are usually green and contain 5 - 8% protein, 0.5% fat, and 10 - 15% carbohydrates in the dry matter. Ripe peas contain 20 - 25% protein, 1 - 3% fat and 60% carbohydrates. Peas are rich in essential amino acids, such as cysteine, methionine, lysine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.
Peas are also rich in minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese and copper.
