Peas belong to the legume family.

Green, unripe peas contain protein, very little fat and carbohydrates.
Peas originally come from Asia. This protein-rich plant has therefore been an important crop for humans and animals for millennia. Immature peas are usually green and contain 5-8% protein, 0.5% fat, and 10-15% carbohydrates in their dry matter. Mature peas contain 20-25% protein, 1-3% fat, and 60% carbohydrates. Peas are rich in essential amino acids such as cysteine, methionine, lysine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.

Peas are also rich in minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese and copper.
