Single feed for birds: Red millet sprays, 1kg
The origin of red millet
The main growing areas for red millet are in China, Central Asia, Afghanistan, and India. It is also cultivated in Southeast Asia, Southeast Europe, South Africa, and Australia, and grows on nutrient-rich loamy and sandy soils.
Why birds love millet sprays
Millet sprays are a popular and tasty food for many birds, especially small birds such as sparrows, finches, goldfinches and dunnocks, as well as ornamental birds such as budgerigars, cockatiels, exotic birds and parrots.
Natural feeding through unthreshed fruit heads
Red millet consists of unthreshed seed heads, where the seeds are still contained in their natural "packaging," the seed head. Therefore, the birds have to work a little for their food, picking the grains individually from the seed head, which promotes a more natural feeding behavior.
Feeding recommendation
Millet sprays should only be offered to birds in small quantities as a treat, as they are relatively low in fat but can lead to obesity if consumed in excess. Furthermore, exclusively consuming millet sprays or panicles can lead to nutritional deficiencies, as the diet would be too monotonous.
The nutritional value of millet sprays compared to other bird foods
Millet contains relatively little fat compared to other bird foods such as sunflower seeds. On average, 100 g of millet contains a maximum of 4 g of fat, while sunflower seeds contain approximately 50 g of fat per 100 g.
