What can go wrong with pigeon nutrition during molting? Insufficient methionine was one of the most common mistakes in the past. This was primarily due to an excessive pea content in pigeon feed mixes. A deficiency in the amino acids arginine, lysine, or zinc led to poor feather coloration, which we call depigmentation in the local terminology. Unfortunately, there are still molting mixes that are inadequate for a perfect molt. These mixes often contain a predominance of corn, peas, and wheat.

These mixtures are not suitable for moulting alone. The moulting process is very stressful for pigeons. The radical regeneration of their plumage deprives them of valuable energy. Now we come to our first point: high-energy mixtures!

So what is important?

Looking at the composition of feathers, we find that they consist of 90% protein, 1.5% fat, and the rest water. An adequate supply of protein is absolutely essential! Furthermore, research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids also play a crucial role in molting. Therefore, a comprehensive diet should include sufficient energy, protein, and omega-3. Dari, for example, has a lower protein content than flaxseed. This brings us to the next point: oil-rich seeds, such as flaxseed. It has a high fat content and a good omega-3 ratio of 2:5. This means that omega-6 is present in 2 parts and omega-3 in 5 parts. Arginine also plays an important role in molting. Hemp seeds are increasingly becoming an important source of raw materials, as they also contain a high fat content and a high amount of usable protein, more than any other component.

A perfect molting mix consists of many available individual seeds, such as canary seed, wild seeds, millet, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, etc., which positively influence the molting process. Pigeons know their needs and therefore instinctively consume the right components.
