Whether and how much effort male and female birds put into nest building is primarily a question of species. In many cases, partners build together, with the male often bringing suitable nesting material, while the female is responsible for the arrangement and interior design, so to speak. In some bird species, females build entirely alone, in others, males. Here are some examples from the local bird world:

Barn and House Martins build together. Crows, Magpies, and Jackdaws also build collaboratively – with some division of labor: the males are primarily material suppliers. Mute Swans and White Storks also build together. House and Tree Sparrows are remarkably equal partners.

That only females build is typical for some finch species: Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Serin, etc. However, they are accompanied by their partner, meaning he is present. Female Blue Tits and Reed Warblers build nests alone.

In some bird species, the males begin nest building alone and continue their activity when a female bird shows interest in them and the site. This is the case with the Penduline Tit, where the pair then continues to build together once the nest and partner have been accepted by the female. Otherwise, the male starts a new nest elsewhere.
