Before its migratory flight, the bird accumulates an abundance of fat to produce energy for the journey. In racing pigeons, 70% of the energy for flight is supplied by the fats contained in the pectoral muscles. These fats release twice as much energy as carbohydrates or proteins of the same weight. These fats are burned through an aerobic biochemical process, producing no lactic acid, thus preventing rapid muscle fatigue. Unlike migratory birds, the pigeon does not know that it is entering a nest and does not prepare for its race. Therefore, the pigeon breeder must ensure this dietary preparation. The essential fatty acids (linoleic, linolenic, and arachidonic acids) cannot be stored by the body but are nevertheless necessary for various physiological processes.
