Cardoon seed is spelled in various ways (safflower seed, safflower seed, cardy, cardy seed) and resembles white sunflower seeds – it is only significantly smaller – but belongs to the thistle family.
Safflower seed contains a lot of iron and calcium and has a much higher protein content of over 25% with over a third less crude fat (30%).
Safflower oil is rich in vitamin E and has a content of 75% unsaturated fatty acids.
The main growing areas are in India, Mexico, the USA, Argentina and Australia.
Instructions for use:
It is commonly used for parakeets, cockatiels, parrots, macaws, canaries, lovebirds, and wild birds in general.
Safflower seeds are not particularly suitable for smaller birds due to their hard shell. However, because they have a strong conditioning effect, they are often fed crushed or rolled.
